TESTIMONIAL: "As a dancer who is out of college, the most valuable aspect for me is having the opportunity to have class on a regular basis with a professional company, in the local area. Along with this, I value the opportunity to continue to grow physically as a dancer and to be able to do it in a professional setting. I value being challenged, in every way, by Kelli and the other dancers. I also value the connections with other dancers/professionals I have made. I think for dancers who are younger or still in high school, the RED apprenticeship is a great way to begin experiencing the world of professional dance close to home, outside of the traditional studio setting. All the dancers adhere to the same professional standards, regardless of apprentice/professional/seniority status. Each dancer is expected to arrive on time, work hard during rehearsal, take care of themselves physically, eat right, and put the commitments of RED before social, recreational, or other commitments (other than education). These are all things expected of a professional dancer. Each dancer is also expected to learn the choreography to every piece the company is performing over the course of the year, whether it be for the nursing home performances, the fall concert, or any other performance, regardless of whether the dancer in cast in the piece or is an understudy. These expectations are what prepare dancers to be professionals. I definitely feel that this opportunity should continue! We live in an area where professional opportunities such as this program are few and far between, or require travelling to a larger city. This program offers great training in modern dance, performance opportunities, and an experience in professional dance that is unique to the Akron area. Any young dancer who shows interest in making dance a part of their professional life, or who wants to expand their knowledge and experience of modern dance would greatly benefit from this program."   ~ 2014 Apprentice Sara Molnar

RED's Apprentice Training Program, designed for young dancers in high school and college, is an opportunity for professional dance performance and technique training. Apprentices work closely with Artistic Director, Kelli Sanford and other professional dancers to develop dance technique, performance skills, and flexible character needed to be successful in the arts and as a productive individual. Periodically, apprentices also have the opportunity to work with Resident Music Composer Alex Cooke to learn fundamentals of music theory. Apprentices will deepen their understanding and appreciation of the arts, enhance adaptability and integration of skills, and develop professional conduct required in performing dance works alongside professional dancers in public dance concerts and outreach performances. Academic achievement is strongly emphasized and all apprentices are required to maintain a (3.0 GPA). All apprentice positions are non-compensated.

TESTIMONIAL: "I am so thankful for all the invaluable technique training I received while in this program. I also have tremendously improved on picking up combinations quicker which I know came from all the fast paced rehearsals with RED. This program prepares the dancers for the professional dance world. The apprentices are made to feel all the same pressures as the professionals are. All of the apprentices are made to understand that they have the same responsibility to their bodies and the choreography as the professionals do. Also, the professionals do not beat around the bush when critiquing and I think that is important to build up a dancers tough skin. This program helped me refine my own career choices and made me value my current training much more."   ~ 2014 Apprentice Lindsey Stennett (Senior, Ravenna High School)
